New York–The World Diamond Council (WDC), the industry organization dedicated to reducing the flow of conflict diamonds, will host a panel discussion on the current state of the Kimberley Process (KP) and consumer confidence in diamonds during the upcoming Las Vegas jewelry shows.
The discussion, entitled “Diamond Dialogue–the Kimberley Process and Consumer Confidence,” is scheduled for June 3 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in Titian Room 2201, located on Level 2 of the Venetian/Palazzo Congress Center. It is sponsored by the Diamond Information Center, the public relations arm of the Diamond Promotion Service, which handles marketing in the United States for De Beers.
WDC President Eli Izhakoff said in a news release that the discussion would present a current snapshot of the decade-long campaign to eradicate the trade in conflict diamonds, the challenges faced by the KP right now and the measures needed to improve its operation and the situation on the ground.
In particular, the panel will look at the new initiatives being undertaken by the KP to ensure consumer confidence in the diamond trade.
According to the release, joining Izhakoff on the panel will be: Brad Brooks-Rubin, with the U.S. State Department; Matthew Runci, president of Jewelers of America and chairman of the board for the Responsible Jewellery Council; Cecilia Gardner, president and chief executive officer of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC); Noora Jamsheer of the United Nations Panel of Experts on Cote D’Ivoire; John Hall, corporate relations manager at Rio Tinto; and representatives of non-governmental organizations active in the industry.
Dorothée Gizenga, director the Diamond Development Initiative, which works to improve the lives of artisanal miners, will moderate the discussion. A light lunch will be provided.
In addition to sitting on the panel for the conflict diamonds discussion, the JVC’s Gardner will participate in a “Gemstone Treatment Update” talk from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on June 3 in Titian Room 2204 on Level 2 of the Venetian.
The discussion will review jewelers’ obligations to disclose current gemstone treatments to customers. Gardner will take questions.
Joining Gardner for the talk will be: Douglas Hucker, chief executive officer of the American Gem Trade Association; Jay Lell of J.R. Dunn Jewelers and Shane McClure of the Gemological Institute of America. Journalist and gemologist Gary Roskin will moderate the discussion.
